Lee Cheatle two day Workshop RECAP

The Cascade Bonsai Club is incredibly fortunate to have someone of Lee Cheatle’s caliber willing to travel to southern Oregon to teach us.   The two-day workshop was full of useful information.  Lee was always ready to answer any question anyone had.  He instructed non-stop for 2 days straight and members went home with fabulous root over rock plantings on Saturday and better-styled trees on Sunday.

Check out some snapshots from the weekend events.

Lee Cheatle Root over Rock workshop and Critique

Saturday 30 March –  8:30 AM to 4:30 PM
Baptist Church (site of previous workshops) 675 Keen Way

Workshop description:
Brief discussion on soils…properties and composition.  This is for our club novices and was requested. Covering the importance of correct soil mixes for conifer and hardwood bonsai. Then Lee will conduct a “root over rock” workshop. Members are required to bring their own trees, pots, rocks, tools, etc. Lee will be bringing  supplemental soils, rocks, pots, wire and muck. He has also gathered a bunch of good sun moss for the students to use and will show us a barrier building technique that he learned from Ryan that may help stabilize root over rock plantings.

Sunday 31 March9 AM to 3 PM
Rec Room at the “Aspen on the Creek” trailer park, 2252 Table Rock Road. This site is only 1 mile off/west of I-5 Exit 30, next to area attraction Railroad Park. The Rec Room is in the center of the trailer court and obvious when you enter. Workshop timing

Critique description:
Members will bring in bonsai that they need help/direction with. A critique of their tree, followed by some hands-on work between Lee and tree owner to assist in furthering the bonsai’s progress. No repotting, rather pruning, shaping and wiring. You may bring more than one bonsai for critiquing, but Lee will only do one member’s bonsai at a time…then move on to a second tree if time permits. Please bring a drop cloth, tools (if you have them) and perhaps some wire. The Rec Room is a very nice facility, so we need to keep our mess to a minimum. There is a full kitchen, restrooms and handicap access to the building. Parking is available behind the building.

Workshop participants must provide their own brow bag lunches, to avoid the delay of folks going out for lunch. The same will apply for both days. We are expecting approximately 11 people per workshop.

Many thanks to Lee and the Bonsai Society of Portland for providing our club with a $250 grant to assist with costs.  Incredible!

POSTPONING this Thursday’s meeting for one week

Club Members:

Due to heavy snow for us mountain folk (I have 10″ of packed snow/ice in my yard) and that I am still recovering from pneumonia…we are POSTPONING this Thursdays meeting for one week.

We are rescheduling for NEXT THURSDAY, 28th February at 7 PM. We will be meeting in the Baptist Church’s “Fireside room” where we have met on an occasion before.

I hope this works for you folk. Sorry to have to reschedule, but I caught the flu (despite having a flu shot) and it morphed into pneumonia. Been down for the past 2 weeks and still only 50%. As we had a lot planned for our February meeting…I needed to be there, hence the postponement for one week.

Hope you all see this before tomorrow night. Would you please respond to this email with a quick note you received it. I will have to call everyone who does not respond via email. Would not want anyone showing up uninformed,  tomorrow.

See you on the 28th.
